Instances of downtime without billing

If the instance is stopped when certain conditions are met, its vCPU, memory, and GPU resources will be released and billing will be stopped, saving money.

Prerequisites and restrictions

Downtime not billing is only supported for instances that also meet the following conditions:

  • The instance scheduling method is automatic host selection, i.e., the instance is not created within the specified proprietary resource pool of the proprietary host.
  • The billing is per configuration.
  • The system disk is a cloud drive.

Operational Impact

  • After the instance is selected to be stopped without billing and successfully stopped, its vCPU, memory, and GPU resources will be released, the local data disk data will be cleared, and the instance billing will be suspended, but the resources associated with the instance such as cloud hard disk and elastic public IP are still billed.
  • Subsequent instances may not start due to insufficient inventory due to inventory limitations at the time of startup, if this happens you can choose to retry the startup operation later or resize the configuration to a fully stocked instance specification.
  1. Some operations, such as resetting the system, resizing the configuration, etc., will require the instance to be shut down first. It is recommended that you turn off the shutdown non-billing function after the operation in this case, so as to ensure that the instance resources are not released and can be started normally after the operation is completed.

    2. For instances that have been turned on for downtime without billing, their billing will stop after the instance triggers a shutdown operation. However, there is a possibility of a stop failure causing the instance to continue running, at which point the billing will return to normal. Please confirm that your instance has successfully switched to STOP status after STOP IN status and successfully stopped billing. If stopping the instance fails, you are asked to perform the stop operation again.

    3. Shutting down within the instance OS can also trigger a console state change to Stop state, and whether or not it can be stopped without billing depends on the current stopped without billing state of that instance. If your instance does not apply the downtime not billing feature or if the downtime not billing feature is turned off, the instance will still be billed.

Operation Steps

Set instance downtime without billing default state

You can set the default state of your outage without billing in the outage without billing notification pop-up window, and then when you create a new instance that meets the conditions, it will be configured for you first according to the default state you choose, simplifying your operation. You can also reassign the downtime unbilling status of an instance each time you create an instance or stop an instance.

Turn on/off downtime unbilling when creating instances

  1. Visit Instance Console, or visit JD Cloud Console and click the top navigation bar Elasticity Computing - Cloud virtual machine - Instance to enter the instance list page.
  2. Select the region where the instance belongs and click the Create button to enter the Virtual Machine instance purchase page.
  3. In the Advanced Options, billing is not required for setting enable/disable shutdown for your instance. If no change is made, the shutdown without billing status of the instance will be the default shutdown without billing status that you previously set.
  4. If the shutdown without billing feature is not applicable to your current instance, then it cannot be set here.

Turn on/off downtime not billing when creating instance templates

  1. Visit Instance Console, or visit JD Cloud Console and click the left navigation bar Elasticity Computing - Cloud virtual machine - Instance Template to enter Instance list page.

  2. Select the locale and click Create to enter the instance template creation page.

  3. In the advanced options, set on/off downtime not billing for the instances in your instance template. If you do not change it, the outage unbilling status of the instance is the outage unbilling default status you set before.

  4. If the instance in your current instance template is not applicable to the downtime not billing feature, it will not be set up here.

If you use an instance template with the downtime not billing feature enabled to create an instance with annual and monthly billing, the created instance will remain in annual and monthly billing status and the downtime not billing feature will not be applied.

Turn on/off downtime unbilling when stopping instances

  1. Access Virtual Machines Console to log in the instance list page. Or, access JD Cloud Console and log in the instance list page by clicking Elastic Compute-Virtual Machine on the top navigation bar.
  2. Select regions.
  3. In the instance list, select the instance that needs to be stopped and apply the shutdown non-billing, click the Operation-Stop button, or click the instance name to enter the details page and click the Operation-Stop button and select the shutdown non-billing function on/off in the Stop pop-up window. If your current instance does not support the Outage Not Billing feature, information related to the Outage Not Billing settings will not be displayed and cannot be set.
  4. Simultaneous operation of multiple instances can be achieved through multiple selection. Check the instance that needs to be stopped in the instance list, click the Stop button at the bottom of the list, and select the unified on/off of the shutdown non-billing function in the Stop pop-up window. Check Keep Current Configuration, whether or not to bill after downtime of each instance will maintain the current setting; check Uniform Setting, the result of the setting will take effect for instances that meet the configuration of downtime not billing, for instances that do not support the feature of downtime not billing, the instance will be displayed as Not Applicable in the column of Downtime Not Billing, you cannot set this feature to on/off for this instance .
  1. Confirm the relevant information in the Stop pop-up window, click OK to submit the stop operation, the instance will enter the Stopping state, and when the stop is completed, the instance will enter the Stop state.

Instances with the shutdown no-billing feature turned on will only be stopped when they are in a Stop state. You can check the instance status and downtime not billing status at the same time after stopping the instance.
