Bandwidth Extension Package

The WAF instance of each version has a certain amount of service bandwidth limitation when the Web Application Firewall (WAF) is activated by purchasing the yearly and monthly payment plan. You can purchase a bandwidth expansion package if your business has greater bandwidth requirements. This paper mainly introduces related concepts and evaluation methods.

What is a business bandwidth limitation?

The service bandwidth of WAF refers to the size of normal service traffic in each WAF instance (including all domain names and sites protected by the WAF instance), with the unit of Mbps. 50Mbps bandwidth corresponds to 1000-1500 QPS (Query Per Second, that is, the amount of requests per second. For example, an HTTP GET and a URL request is a Query). The corresponding QPS is slightly different depending on the size of the requested resource.

Different versions of WAF have a certain amount of service bandwidth limitations. For example, in the WAF Enterprise Version package, the service bandwidth limitation for the origin server in JD Cloud is 100Mbps, and the service bandwidth limitation for servers outside JD Cloud is 50Mbps.

How to choose bandwidth limitation

You need to consider in advance the peak daily inbound and outbound traffic of all domain names (sites) you plan to protect through the WAF configuration when you purchase a WAF to make sure that he service bandwidth limitation corresponding to the WAF package you purchased is greater than the larger value of the total peak traffic in the inbound and outbound directions.

Description: In general, the outbound traffic is relatively large.

You can refer to your site server's monitoring tool to assess your actual business traffic. For example, if you need to protect five sites through WAF configuration, the peak value of normal traffic in the outbound direction of each site does not exceed 10Mbps, and the total traffic does not exceed 50Mbps. In this case, you only need to purchase the WAF Enterprise Version.

Description: The traffic required for evaluating the business refers to the normal business traffic. You can increase the business bandwidth limitation of your WAF instance by purchasing an extended bandwidth package when purchasing a WAF instance.

Exceeding business bandwidth

The traffic forwarding of all services configured in the WAF instance may be affected if your normal business traffic exceeds the business bandwidth limitation of the WAF instance you have purchased.

If the service bandwidth limit is exceeded, flow limiting and random packet loss may occur, resulting in your normal service being unavailable, stuck, and delayed for a certain period of time.

If this happens, you need to upgrade the WAF version or purchase a bandwidth expansion package to avoid the impact of normal service traffic exceeding the service bandwidth limitation.

How to choose bandwidth expansion package

You can purchase a bandwidth expansion package to prevent exceeding the business bandwidth limitation of the WAF instance if your domain name (site) protected by WAF has heavy business traffic. For example, if your current business traffic demand is 80Mbps (the origin server outside JD Cloud), and you have purchased a WAF Enterprise Version instance (with a bandwidth limit of 50Mbps), you need to purchase an additional 30Mbps of extended bandwidth to ensure that your business access is normal.
